Marriage is a thing of love, respect and dignity but when culture comes in to play it part, then it turn to tradition which everyone staying or residing within it must practice – some partake in it while some can be banished out of the land for failing to practices the culture and tradition of the land.
This might sound interesting to engage in marriage, but in this case, it goes a very long way in the ears and mind of others when the culture speaks of itself. Also, in a population where everyone can easily be controlled, most time people around the environment are forced to practiced things they don’t love doing.
The people of ‘Latuka – Otuho tribe’ belongs to the Nilotic ethnic group which their traditions base/home is at the Eastern Equatorial; state of South Sudan. The village have a population of five hundred thousand to seven hundred thousand people (500,000 – 700,000).
The village which comprises of other towns which are: Offi, Ifwotu, Illieu, Oudo, Oronyo, Obira, Haforiare and other which are not mentioned here.
They have their own official language which is ‘the Otuho language ‘. Just like any other tribe and culture in Africa, the women of this village are kidnapped for marriage. Kidnapping the women of this village is their tradition.
Kidnapping the woman out of her bound and here, she has no say about what will be happening to her or the choice she would be making as while she will be spending the rest of her life with the person who kidnapped her as a wife.
When culture is brutal and unbearable, the people try to fight their way out of it. And in this kind of situation where they can’t make decision on whom to marry, it is to play by it till the right or appropriate solution comes to their aid.
The men who kidnap the woman they want to have as wife would go to the father of the woman or lady, propose and ask her hand in marriage. If the father accepts the offer (proposal to marry his daughter), he will beat the man as a sign and form of accepting his proposal as the son-in-law and prepare for the necessary rite and ceremony immediately.
If the case turns around, and the father rejects the proposal to have his daughter’s hand in marriage, the man will marry the lady/woman without the father’s consent.
The people of Latuka – Otuho tribe engage themselves in agriculture products for survival and means of living where they keep large herd of sheep, cattle, goats and supplement it with hunting and fishing.
